Too often in life people jump from one experience to the next without consciously thinking about what they need to say or do before finishing. They become so forward-looking that they rush onward and upward without giving any real attention to saying goodbye.
Creating closure on Study Abroad is important. The period leading up to finishing your program can be filled with lots of ups and downs. On one hand you may be looking forward to traveling more or getting back home to friends and family, yet on the other hand you’re resisting letting go of this life you’ve created abroad.
There will undoubtedly be many people and places that impacted your experience on Study Abroad. Instead of jumping ahead to what’s next, start to reflect on your time and notice how you’ve changed. What do you need to say or do in order to feel complete abroad?
Despite your best intentions, the reality is that it could be many years, if ever, before you get back to your beloved host city or country. Creating closure is a healthy way to honor where you’ve been and who you’ve become on Study Abroad while opening the door to a new chapter.
What will you do to say goodbye?
